Ethan D'Ver is a senior at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and plans on attending a music conservatory in the fall. His musical inclinations became apparent when he took up piano at the age of five. He later studied trombone and currently plays in both LaGuardia's Senior Orchestra and Jazz Band. He is quickly making his mark as a young composer.
His Brooklyn Bound F Train was performed by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan Gilbert, at the School Day Concert series on May 19, 2010, and the South Shore Symphony is presenting its Long Island Premiere. He received the 2010 Charles Fox Award, presented to a promising composer from LaGuardia High School.
Currently, Ethan is testing his teaching skills by mentoring younger composers in the New York Philharmonic's Bridge program. He is an active member of Making Score, a program of the New York Youth Symphony that has nurtured his talents for several years. They will be premiering his new string quartet at Symphony Space in Manhattan on May 4, 2011.
Brooklyn Bound F Train is a programmatic orchestral composition meant to portray the path of the F Train as it goes through tranquil Queens, chaotic Manhattan, and offbeat Brooklyn. At the beginning and end of the piece, as well as between each borough is the driving mechanical theme of the train itself. The constant motion of the train imagery continues to a certain extent in each borough, to serve as a constant reminder that the listener is still "on a train", even in the borough sections. The piece was orchestrated in 2010 from an original woodwind quartet written in 2009.
