Orchestra Member Information

Arthur E. Goldstein

Arthur Goldstein had a long and successful career as a horn player and teacher. He attended New York University and was a proud graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music. He studied horn with Josef Franzl and Willem Valkenier.

Arthur performed with the 388th USAF Band, the Buffalo Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, and the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, soloed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, and played for decades in Broadway shows. In addition to playing the horn, Arthur taught the horn for decades. Many of his students have gone on to successful careers in fine orchestras. Those who did not go onto careers as professional horn players have a great appreciation of music and playing the horn. His students, without fail, express love, respect, and deep appreciation for his guidance.

In addition to a marvelous career of performing and teaching, Arthur wrote several excellent method books for horn and penned the hilarious "Professor Schmutzig" books which have been in print for over fifty years. These publications were the beginning of Cor Publishing Company. Arthur formed Cor Publishing and soon began publishing the works of fellow musicians in addition to his own works. Several years ago Arthur sold Cor to the Wiltshire Music Company and continued to enjoy watching his company expand and grow until the end of his life.

Arthur passed away in January, 2009, with his beloved wife Jeanne at his side. He is greatly missed by his fellow musicians, students, friends and his loving family.

This concert is being performed tonight to honor Arthur, a great horn player and even greater person.
