Heitor Villa-Lobos was a prominent Brazilian composer whose works combine elements of European classical style with rhythms and melodies of Brazilian folk music.
Villa -Lobos was mostly self-taught. His most famous works are the nine suites, known as Bbachianas Brasileiras (1930-45). They are varied in their instrumentation, and blend the contrapuntal style of J.S. Bach with the powerful rhythms and melodic styles of the folk music of northeastern Brazil.
