Rockville Centre Mayor’s Golf Classic raises $66,000 for RVC Community Fund
October 6, 2023

In recognition of his decades of service to the community, this year’s Eugene J. Murray Outstanding Service Award was presented to Wayne Lipton.  Lipton served as deputy mayor of the village for eight years under the late former Mayor Eugene Murray, whom the award is named after. He has served as the acting president and principal cellist of the South Shore Symphony Orchestra since 1991.

Adam Glaser, associate professor of music and director of orchestras, has been appointed new music director and conductor of the South Shore Symphony, a leading Long Island symphony orchestra comprised entirely of volunteer musicians.

​Photos: Fireworks light up the night in Rockville Centre

Crowds of people gathered at the Pette and Barasch ball fields near the Mill River bank in Rockville Centre on Saturday night to find the perfect spot to revel in the light and sound of the annual fireworks celebration and concert.
For the last three decades, this free event has been hosted by the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts and the Village of Rockville Centre in celebration of our nation’s independence. And this year’s festivities were no different.

Some final notes: Celebrated South Shore Symphony music director bids farewell

It’s the end of an era. The South Shore Symphony’s distinguished music director and conductor Scott Jackson Wiley will pass on his baton after the orchestra’s performance at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre on Sunday, June 4, 2023.

The annual concert at the majestic church is a fitting finale to Wiley’s 25-year tenure. The full orchestra — all 80 musicians — demonstrate the breadth and depth of their musicianship performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection.” The Diocesan Choir with guest soloists — along with organist Michael Bower, director of music at St. Agnes —will also participate. The vast work, lasting nearly 90 minutes, commands a complete orchestra, with extra brass, choir, soprano and contralto soloists.
